The events in Kronstadt in 1921 became shorthand for many Communists as they defected. Among them was Whittaker Chambers (1901-1961). He was a TIME senior editor and translator (including Bambi), best known as the former spy who, under HUAC subpoena, accused Alger Hiss and six other former Federal employees of Communist Party allegiance, leading to the Hiss-Chambers Case (1948-1950), and recounted in his memoirs, Witness (1952): more...
